On September 26th, our school board approved the preliminary school district levy. Despite the levy including the increase that comes from the bond approved back in May, along with increases in district enrollment, homeowners will see a smaller tax increase than was estimated following the passage of the bond referendum.
Prior to the referendum, the district communicated that school taxes on the average $300,000 home would increase by approximately $6.33 per month with the approval of the bond. According to Ehlers, the preliminary levy approved by the board on Monday (which includes the bond) will come at an increase of only $4.16 per month on a $300,000 home. This is over $2 per month less than was communicated last spring.
Why did the cost decrease? The monthly cost on a $300,000 home decreased due to multiple factors, including new housing developments, increased market values and bond sales coming in approximately $3.4 million less than projected.
All welcome news for Westonka homeowners!
Construction crews are finishing up the final punch list items on Mound Westonka High School Field 2, with the goal of having the field in use by the fall of 2017. This project was made possible due, in large part, to a grant from Hennepin County and a generous donation from the Westonka Soccer Club.
Construction has begun on the early learning center and will continue throughout the school year. The facility is scheduled to open next July. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we continue work on this new facility.
Planning continues on the athletics and recreation center and 600-seat performing arts center at Mound Westonka High School. Construction should start in May and will be completed by fall of 2018.
